The holiday season can be a time of joy, connection, and celebration, but it can also bring unique challenges, especially for people with disability and their families.
At Opendoor, we know that December and January don’t always mean “time off.” Routines can shift, services may close for a break, and the social calendar can be overwhelming (or too quiet). That’s why we work with participants and carers to make sure your NDIS supports still fit your needs during the festive period.
The holidays can feel different for everyone
For some participants, the holidays are about packed schedules: family gatherings, community events, and end-of-year celebrations. For others, it’s a quieter time when regular activities pause, and the days can feel longer.
Both situations can bring their own challenges:
- Managing changes in routine
- Dealing with sensory overload or social fatigue
- Navigating feelings of loneliness or isolation
- Keeping up with essential supports when providers close for the break

How Opendoor helps you prepare
1) Planning ahead
In the weeks before the holiday period, our team works with you to:
- Review your current supports and routines
- Identify services that will be closed and find alternatives
- Schedule key appointments or activities before closures
2) Creating a holiday-friendly schedule
We help you adapt your week so you can keep up with important activities, enjoy social events at your own pace, and still have time for rest.
3) Connecting you with community events
From accessible Christmas activities to quiet community lunches, we can help you find the right events to match your comfort level and interests.
4) Supporting carers
We know carers also need downtime during the festive season. We’ll work with families to make sure there’s backup support in place where possible.
Ideas for a positive holiday season
- Join an inclusive community event – Ask your Support Coordinator to help find activities that are accessible and welcoming.
- Stick to some familiar routines – Even small things, like keeping a regular bedtime or meal schedule, can help reduce stress.
- Create a ‘quiet corner’ – If social gatherings are part of your plans, set aside a space where you can take a break when you need it.
- Plan ahead for meals and transport – This can make outings easier and reduce last-minute stress.
- Keep connected – If you can’t be with friends or family, consider video calls or community groups to stay in touch.
