Socialising and skills building with fruitful results

At Opendoor, we believe that growth happens best when we’re connected to our community. Our Gardening Program at the Braybrook Community Gardens is a weekly, ongoing group designed specifically for NDIS participants. It’s one of the many activities NDIS participants can do when they join Opendoor’s Social Options. Our social options, like our Gardening Program, are more than just a hobby. They provide an opportunity to get out and about, build independence, and find a true sense of belonging in a welcoming, inclusive space – whatever your interests are.

More than just gardening

While we certainly focus on the greenery, the heart of this program is the people. With Opendoor’s NDIS Social Options we keep our groups small to ensure that everyone receives personalised support from our highly trained support workers. This setup gives participants the confidence to:

  • Build lasting friendships and socialise in a relaxed environment.
  • Practise mindfulness and enjoy the natural stress relief of being outdoors.
  • Develop routine and independence through consistent weekly engagement.

Hands-on skills, real-world rewards

Whether you’re a seasoned green thumb or have never planted a seed in your life, there is a place for you here. Participants learn practical horticulture skills, including:

  1. Planting: Selecting and sowing seasonal seeds.
  2. Maintenance: Learning the art of nurturing herbs, vegetables, and flowers.
  3. Harvesting: Knowing exactly when those carrots or sprigs of basil are ready for the table.

“It’s a hands-on, feel-good program that supports wellbeing and creates meaningful social connections.”

Reaping what you sow

The best part? The rewards are tangible. Participants get to enjoy the literal fruits (and vegetables) of their labour. Whether it’s taking home fresh produce for a home-cooked meal, sharing the harvest with new friends, or contributing to the local Braybrook community, the sense of achievement is second to none.
