Studying in the Summer: How to Stay Motivated

For many people, summer is a time for holidays, BBQs, and relaxing by the beach. But for some students, it’s also a time for studying. Whether you’re finishing a course, starting a short program, or getting ahead for the new year.

Studying in the warmer months can bring its own set of challenges: higher temperatures, social distractions, and a natural urge to slow down. But with the right strategies, summer can actually be one of the best times to focus and make progress.

Important Dates

Our classes finish up on 19 December and officially resume on 28 January. While trainers are contractors and may not be available during the break unless arranged beforehand, our RTO team and Student Support Officer are here to help you throughout summer.

1) Set realistic summer study goals

You might not have the same energy or focus as during cooler months, so adjust your expectations:

  • Break big projects into smaller steps
  • Aim for shorter, more frequent study sessions
  • Celebrate small wins to stay motivated

2) Beat the heat

Studying in hot weather can be uncomfortable and reduce concentration. Try:

  • Studying early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler
  • Choosing a study space with air-conditioning or a fan
  • Staying hydrated!! Keep a water bottle within arm’s reach
  • Wearing light, breathable clothing

3) Balance study and summer fun

It’s important to enjoy the season too. Plan your study time so you can:

  • Attend summer events
  • Spend time with friends and family
  • Take breaks outdoors for fresh air and movement
💡 Tip: Use summer activities as rewards! Finish a study session, then head to the beach or have a cold treat.

4) Stay connected for accountability

It’s easier to stay on track when you have support. At Opendoor, we encourage students to:

  • Join study groups (online or in person)
  • Reach out to our Student Support Officer for guidance
  • Share progress with friends or family who can help keep you motivated

5) Use the season to your advantage

Summer can be a great time for:

  • Catching up on coursework
  • Reviewing materials before classes resume
  • Setting goals for the new year

Make this summer count

With a little planning, studying in summer can be both productive and enjoyable. By balancing your learning with seasonal activities, you can start the new year feeling accomplished and ready for what’s next.
