Supported Employment

How We Can Help

Opendoor supports people with disability to work toward meaningful employment and education in ways that are realistic, respectful, and sustainable. Our employment supports are built around long-term outcomes, not short-term placements, and are guided by each participant’s NDIS goals.

We understand that families are often looking for more than a job outcome. They want to know that their family member will be supported, understood, and set up for success over time. Our approach focuses on building confidence, skills, and genuine belonging in the workplace.

With almost 40 years of experience, Opendoor has strong connections across the communities we support. We have established relationships with local employers, industry partners, training providers, and community organisations, allowing us to create informed and individualised employment pathways rather than relying on generic job matching.

We know that there is no single pathway into employment. Some people benefit from time to explore their interests and strengths, while others need structured, ongoing support in the workplace. Many people require both.

Our Approach to Employment

We know that there is no single pathway into employment. Some people benefit from time to explore their interests and strengths, while others need structured, ongoing support in the workplace. Many people require both.

Our employment supports are:

    • Individualised pathways are designed around the participant, not a program model ·
    • Relationship-based built on trust, consistency, and understanding
    • Flexible supports adjust as confidence, skills, and independence grow
    • Community-connected informed by strong local employer and stakeholder relationships

Families are included where appropriate, and communication is clear and ongoing so everyone understands what support looks like and how progress is being made.

Supported Employment

Supported Employment is Opendoor’s customised and supported employment approach. It is designed for people who need a personalised pathway into work and, in many cases, ongoing support to maintain employment.

We take the time to understand the whole person their strengths, interests, support needs, communication style, and preferred working environment. This information forms the foundation of an employment pathway that is practical, achievable, and meaningful.

Supports may include:

  • Discovery and exploration of interests, strengths, and vocational preferences
  • Employment counselling to support decision-making, confidence, and work-related wellbeing
  • Career planning aligned with NDIS goals
  • Development of work readiness and foundational employment skills
  • Identification and customisation of suitable employment opportunities
  • Engagement with employers to create or adapt roles that are a good fit
  • On-the-job support to build skills, routines, and workplace confidence
  • Ongoing assistance to help sustain employment over time.

Our long-standing relationships with employers and stakeholders support strong employment outcomes. While every participant’s journey is different, our focus is always on finding the right fit rather than the fastest placement.

Support Beyond the Job

Employment does not exist in isolation. For many participants, success at work is closely linked to confidence, wellbeing, routine, and support outside the workplace.

We work alongside participants to help them:

  • build confidence and independence
  • navigate workplace expectations and changes
  • develop strategies to manage challenges at work
  • maintain balance between work, education, and personal life.

Support can change over time and is guided by what the participant needs at each stage of their employment journey.

Assistance to Access and Maintain Employment or Education

In line with each participant’s NDIS plan, we provide support to assist people to access and maintain employment or education.

This may include support with:

  • transitioning from school to further education or employment
  • entering or re entering the workforce
  • maintaining employment or study over time
  • navigating changes in work or education environments.

We offer reliable, community-driven NDIS services to help you achieve your goals, build independence, and stay connected.

NDIS Frequently Asked Questions

?

NDIS stands for the National Disability Insurance Scheme. It provides support to people with a disability, their families and carers. It is jointly governed and funded by the States and Territories within Australia. NDIS is about giving people with disability the choice and control over the supports that meet their needs, with the appropriate funding available to make this happen.

It covers the needs of people with disability up to the age of 65.

It can provide assistance in a wide variety of areas determined by meetings with planners and other people who are there to advocate on your behalf.

NDIS funding is determined by your planner and will aim to:
