Happy to see you go Nina!

At Opendoor, we love nothing more than seeing someone walk confidently into their next chapter and that’s exactly what Nina is doing. After an inspiring journey through our NDIS Community Access Program and Training Services, Nina is moving forward towards her dream of working in childcare, with newfound confidence, skills and independence.

This is Nina’s story one of transformation, empowerment, and what’s possible when we open doors together.

From hesitation to hope

When Nina first came to Opendoor, she newly arrived in Melbourne from Sydney, eager to work but unsure where to start.

“I was referred by Centrelink because I wanted employment support,” she recalls. “I’ve always been interested in childcare, and when I saw Opendoor offered courses, my support worker helped me enrol.

Those early days weren’t easy. “At the start, I wanted to quit all the time,” Nina admits. “I have dyslexia and it was frustrating to express my thoughts. It was hard.”

Support that makes a difference

Nina’s journey shows the power of cross-service support with her Community Access support workers and Training Services team working side by side to help her succeed.

She was supported twice a week: once in the classroom and once at home to work on her assessments. When it came time for her work placement, she was accompanied by a familiar face to ease her nerves.

Her teacher Jenny made a lasting impression: “She’s amazing,” Nina says with a smile. “She takes the time to explain things so everyone can understand.”

Support worker Amanda, who cheered Nina on during her placement, says “she had confidence deep down. She just needed someone to bring it out. I used to tell her, ‘If you put your mind to it, you can achieve it.’”

A journey of growth

Over the months, Nina’s confidence blossomed. With mindfulness techniques, positive workplace habits and consistent encouragement, she overcame her anxieties and even completed her first day of placement solo.

The milestone that stands out most? “Definitely finishing my course,” she says proudly.

Amanda remembers a special moment at the end of Nina’s placement when the director of the childcare centre pulled Nina aside to offer her a job “that made me emotional. She worked so hard, and she deserved it.”

What’s Next

These days, Nina volunteers as an assistant in the classroom, helping current students with their own journeys while she waits to receive her certificate and step into a paid role in childcare.

She admits to feeling “nervous but excited” about what’s ahead and there’s no doubt she’s ready.

When asked what her life might look like if she hadn’t joined Opendoor, she answers honestly: “Probably sitting on my bum, being lazy, not doing anything.”

Instead, she’s a shining example of what’s possible. Her advice for others just starting out?

“Go for it! Do what you want to do with life.”

A team effort

For everyone at Opendoor who supported Nina, her success is a reminder of what can be achieved through teamwork, belief and a little courage.

“She’s a go-getter,” Amanda says. “She’s funny, caring, and a kind soul. Anything’s possible if you put your mind to it.”

From all of us at Opendoor: congratulations, Nina. We’re proud to have walked this journey with you, and even prouder to see you walk confidently into your next chapter.

Thank you for letting us be part of your story.
