Ryder, Better Futures participant
After finishing Year 12, Ryder felt lost. While many teenagers struggle with what to do next, Ryder faced additional challenges that made figuring out his future even harder. Living with his sister, under kinship care, he found himself stuck, unsure of where to turn.
That’s when Child Protection Services stepped in and connected him with Opendoor’s Better Futures program, a service that became a lifeline for Ryder. Through the program, he was introduced to his youth coach, Rebekah, who provided ongoing support and guidance. Opendoor’s Better Futures program focuses on helping young people in challenging situations build the skills they need for independence, and for Ryder, it made all the difference.
With Rebekah’s help, Opendoor provided opportunities for Ryder to develop his career path, offering him resources and advice that helped him overcome the hurdles he was facing.
Ryder learned how to overcome some of his personal challenges, become more independent, find, and prepare for employment.
Rebekah also arranged for Ryder to be the very first Better Futures participant to take part in Opendoor’s social enterprise, LoveLuvo, work experience program. This program gave Ryder the opportunity to develop transferable skills including customer service and stock taking. It also helped him build confidence and find a sense of direction.

Ryder’s turning point came when he was accepted into Deakin University to study a Bachelor of Arts (Creative Writing). Armed with the skills and self-belief he gained through Better Futures, Ryder is now chasing his dream of writing fictional novels. Who knows – Ryder might just be the next JK Rowlings.
Ryder’s story shows how the right support, like the services provided by Opendoor, can transform lives. His journey from feeling lost to gaining independence and pursuing a university degree is a testament to what young people can achieve when given the tools and guidance to succeed.
“Opendoor is very helpful for someone who needs help or be told what to do to get out of a tough situation. Opendoor has shown me what opportunities are available to me, which has given me a lot more confidence in myself.” Ryder, Better Futures participant
