Good News Story: Resilience and Renewal: Karen’s Journey

Karen, a determined 61-year-old, is a shining example of resilience and renewal. A participant with Opendoor’s Disability Employment Services at Opendoor’s Melton office, her story is one of overcoming adversity and finding a renewed sense of purpose.

In 2006, Karen’s life took a drastic turn due to a severe car accident that left her with significant injuries and limited mobility. For 16 long years, she battled pain and the aftermath of her injuries. It was during this challenging period that Karen discovered Opendoor, thanks to a recommendation aimed at helping her secure meaningful employment that accommodated her needs.

Before her accident, Karen had a thriving career in senior management, where she excelled in overseeing customer service operations for high-profile businesses, including major banks and national retailers. Her expertise in developing systems and improving business efficiencies was widely recognised. However, the accident not only damaged her spine but also left her grappling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which drastically altered her ability to lead a normal life.

Despite her anxieties about returning to work, Karen’s determination to regain a sense of purpose led her to Opendoor. Her initial apprehension about engaging with an employment service provider quickly dissipated upon meeting her employment consultant, Kasey. Together, they updated Karen’s resume, showcasing her extensive skills and experience. Karen’s journey with Opendoor was further enriched by enrolling in digital literacy short courses, which bolstered her confidence and reassured her of her valuable skills.

With Kasey’s unwavering support and encouragement, Karen was ready to re-enter the workforce. Her perseverance paid off when an administration position at Birch Gardening and Cleaning became available. This role perfectly matched her expertise and needs, allowing her to oversee various aspects of the business, from office management and HR to marketing and customer service.

Karen has now been thriving in this role for three years. She has been instrumental in expanding the business, increasing staff from 4 to 11 and growing the client base. Working from home, Karen continues to acquire new skills while ensuring her workspace accommodates her needs, thanks to Opendoor’s support.

Opendoor’s commitment to Karen’s well-being extended beyond employment. They provided her with a Board Scholarship Award, enabling her to acquire an adjustable hospital-quality bed to alleviate her back pain. The ongoing support from the Opendoor Melton team has been a cornerstone of Karen’s success, whether it’s assisting with living costs or offering a listening ear during tough times.

Reflecting on her journey, Karen shares, “I’m a much better person to be around. I have a lot to be thankful for, especially with all the assistance Opendoor Melton has given me over the years. I feel more content – I want to get up in the mornings and be a member of society. I love my work and the people I deal with. Many of my clients are TAC patients who I can personally relate to, so I don’t feel alone. Opendoor gave me hope and I want to be able to pass it onto others in similar situations.” Karen’s story is a testament to the transformative power of Opendoor Melton’s support, resilience, and the pursuit of purpose.
