MEET DAVID
David is breaking barriers and defying expectations as he embarks on an exciting career in mechanics. Living with his supportive foster parents in Croydon, David has always had a passion for all things mechanical. After completing Year 12 at Heatherwood School, a special school, he seized the opportunity to turn his passion into reality by enrolling in a mechanical apprenticeship at PMA Auto Works in Ringwood.
David’s journey to this point has not been easy. He faces several challenges, including a Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), all which stem from childhood trauma. However, thanks to the unwavering support from his foster parents—who are no strangers to fostering—David has found a nurturing environment that encourages his growth and independence. Despite his barriers, David has shown remarkable resilience. He has actively worked on building his self-esteem and enhancing his social interaction skills, which have historically triggered his anxiety. He is committed to improving his conversational skills and regularly manages his anxiety and traumatic memories through coping strategies.
To further support David’s development, the All Abilities Agency (AAA) referred him to Opendoor, where he received tailored assistance through a customised employment process. This included trial work at another mechanical workshop, designed to build his skills and prepare him for his apprenticeship. Since joining Opendoor, David has benefited from continuous monitoring and support to ensure his ongoing success in the workplace.
David also receives support through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which helps him navigate the academic aspects of his apprenticeship while predicting and managing any potential barriers, such as anxiety and social situations. His commitment to becoming a skilled mechanic is evident in his enthusiastic approach to work and learning.
As a result of his determination and hard work, David has become a valuable member of the PMA Auto Works team. The owner has expressed high praise for David’s contributions, stating he would like to have ten more employees with David’s dedication and positive attitude. David’s journey exemplifies the power of support and a positive mindset. He remains focused on achieving his goals, overcoming his challenges while embodying the spirit of determination.
