MEET DARBY
At just 24 years old, Darby is carving out a promising future in the media industry as he pursues a Diploma in Screen and Media, focusing on Content Creation. With a Year 12 equivalent under his belt, he is determined to enhance his skills and knowledge through university studies, balancing academic responsibilities with life in a rental home he shares with family.
Darby’s journey has been defined by resilience and tenacity. He is fully engaged in his coursework and exploring various creative projects to sharpen his content creation skills.
His connection with Opendoor began through Centrelink. Darby feels fortunate to have been matched with Opendoor. He expresses heartfelt gratitude for the exceptional support he has received from his employment coaches Mehr and Jane, who have made a remarkable impact on his experience. “I’ve never encountered the genuine care they provide,” Darby notes, emphasising the positive influence they’ve had on his journey.
Through Opendoor, Darby has accessed valuable resources that have been crucial for his success. The employment fund facilitated driving lessons, psychological support, and Employability Skills Training. Thanks to this comprehensive assistance, Darby has successfully obtained his driver’s license and purchased his own vehicle. “The driving lessons were invaluable. I couldn’t have afforded them otherwise, and now I enjoy the freedom it brings,” he shares, highlighting the newfound opportunities that driving has unlocked for him.
Darby is particularly appreciative of the mental health support he has received, which he describes as instrumental in maintaining his overall well-being. He acknowledges the role Jane played in supporting him with achieving his goals to study further. Without her encouragement, he may not have enrolled himself in the Diploma of Screen and Media, which he began in July 2024 and is set to complete in November.
“The support I’ve received has been a game-changer for my goals in employment and education,” Darby states, underscoring the importance of Opendoor’s guidance as he aims for independence and full-time employment in the media industry.
