MEET DEBRA

Debra, a 59-year-old mother of five, has faced significant challenges throughout her life, including a long history of trauma that has deeply impacted her mental health. Living with severe depression and anxiety, Debra navigates life with her two high school daughters, juggling her family responsibilities while working to improve her own situation.

After dedicating most of her career to the hospitality sector, Debra found herself struggling with technology and online tasks, which added another layer of difficulty in her journey towards employment. In early 2021, she joined Workforce Australia and later transitioned to Disability Employment Services (DES), seeking support to overcome the obstacles she faced.

Upon her arrival at Opendoor DES St Albans, Debra encountered several hurdles that made it hard for her to trust others. Having relied on herself for so long, she was hesitant to accept assistance and struggled with motivation and confidence. However, with a dedicated team by her side, Debra began to build rapport and recognize her immense potential.

Through collaborative efforts, Debra received vital support in job preparation, including resume writing, interview skills, and personalized guidance to enhance her self-worth. With unwavering commitment and resilience, Debra began to believe in herself and her capabilities.

Thanks to her determination, Debra has secured a full-time position at the airport, preparing food for Emirates Airlines. Her journey exemplifies the power of perseverance and the positive impact of support systems in overcoming adversity.

Debra’s story showcases the strength it takes to overcome adversity and the transformative power of community support. She is an inspiration to her family and a shining example of what can be achieved with determination and assistance.
