MEET ELLA

At just 16, Ella has already proven that determination and passion can overcome any challenge. Coming from a low socio-economic background and a broken family, Ella faced significant hurdles, including disengagement from mainstream education and a lack of confidence. But she wasn’t going to let these obstacles define her future.

Ella’s love for working with her hands started early, helping her dad in his mechanics’ workshop. However, she found her true calling in carpentry, specifically cabinet making, which she believed aligned more with her skills and interests. In April this year, she reached out to Opendoor for support in finding a pathway to make her dream a reality.

Despite traditionally male-dominated industries like carpentry and joinery being tough to break into, Ella remained resilient and resourceful. With the support of her parents and her Youth Coach at Opendoor, she began building her career. After successfully completing a Certificate II in Construction Pathways through Northern Futures, Ella impressed an employer during a work trial at Gforce and was offered a coveted apprenticeship in joinery.

“Ella stood out, not just because she was the only girl, but because of her maturity, clarity, and motivation,” said her Youth Coach.

Her journey into the trade industry has been one of determination. From attending trade-based immersions and workshops to taking every opportunity to prove her passion for joinery, Ella has shown that she is more than capable of excelling in her chosen field.

Her supervisors at the joinery manufacturer were equally impressed during her work trial, noting her eagerness to learn, her attentiveness, and her ability to fit in seamlessly with the team. Now, Ella embarks on her apprenticeship as the only female in the workshop, determined to succeed and continue breaking down barriers.

“I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands, but I wanted to work with wood. It’s amazing to be in an industry I’m passionate about,” Ella shared.

Ella’s story is an inspiration to many young women who aspire to enter male-dominated industries. She is living proof that with determination and hard work, you can turn dreams into reality—no matter the odds.
