MEET ALEX
At just 20 years old, Alex is a remarkable young man from Frankston who is making waves in the workforce and inspiring others along the way. After engaging with Opendoor’s Eligible School Leavers (ESL) program through Disability Employment Services in 2022, while completing his final year at Naranga School in Karingal, he embarked on a journey of self-discovery and growth. Despite having numerous skills, Alex struggled to identify how to apply them in a work setting and had limited employment knowledge and experience.
Over the course of six months, Alex met fortnightly with Opendoor staff to develop a plan for his future, focusing on essential work readiness components like resume building, cover letters, and career exploration. Alex’s determination and hard work soon paid off when an opportunity arose for a warehouse assistant position at Holyoake Industries—a company celebrated for its inclusive work environment.
Initially hesitant, Alex was encouraged by his grandfather, who raised him after he lost his parents at a young age, and fondly remembered similar roles, to take a tour of the facility. Fast forward 18 months, and he has become one of Holyoake’s star employees, not only excelling in his position but also training and supervising new recruits with similar challenges. Those who meet him often sing his praises, noting his conscientious, kind, and moral character.
Alex’s success is also reflected in his personal achievements. This year, he saved enough of his wages to purchase a brand-new Kia Cerato GT, fulfilling a dream of traveling around Victoria. Proudly driving his shiny new car, Alex was asked to return to his old school to share his journey and advocate for the benefits of employment and the support he received from Opendoor. Alex’s employer and former school consistently commend his positive attitude and dedication, highlighting how he embodies the spirit of what it means to overcome barriers and lead by example. Alex is a true ambassador for Opendoor.
We are excited to see the future achievements that await him. He has already proven that with hard work, resilience, and a supportive community, anything is possible.
