Shedding more light on our shared shed project

15/04/2026

We’re excited to share an update on the Garden Shed Project in Ferntree Gully!

This is a true story of how residents from a small community in Melbourne were gathering in an old and rundown garden shed. Keen for quality time with neighbours, residents would visit the shed for connection, friendship, and laughter. The residents had nowhere else to meet up, and the shed became their go-to place come rain or shine.

The shed changed their lives. It provided safety and respite from isolation and their small units. However, it needed a makeover.

How did Opendoor contribute to the project?

That’s where Opendoor stepped in and took on the garden shed revamp project.

Participants on the Workforce Australia Work for the Dole program were given a clear objective: to create a multifunctional space where residents could meet, cook, learn, and feel less alone.

The shed project has been well received

We are thrilled to share feedback from Brad Byrne, Job Coordinator at Workforce Australia North Eastern Melbourne, who attended our celebratory opening of the new community shed. He said:

“Opendoor’s Workforce Australia team has continued to demonstrate how much benefit can be delivered to the community through employment services when working collaboratively with local organisations, and putting local community and participant needs first.”

He continued, “The [Workforce Australia] programs have delivered amazing outcomes for the individual participants, the host organisations, and the local community, and are clear examples of how innovation can re-define what is possible.

“None of these successes would have been possible without the hard work, collaboration and community-minded approach that Opendoor’s Granville, Ashlee and their teams prioritise when developing each activity.

“It is fantastic to attend these celebrations and meet with so many local community members, businesses and organisations that have been involved in the project, to hear how proud they are of their contribution, and to see first hand the benefits delivered.”

Opendoor proudly echoes Brad’s thoughts, and we’re already looking forward to seeing the next incredible project by the Workforce Australia Work for the Dole team. Learn more about their work and how it benefits the community on the Workforce Australia Work for the Dole program webpage.
