World Day for Safety and Health at Work (28 April) is a significant day for us all, especially as it makes us consider what “safety” really means. For many, safety is about hard hats, hi-vis jackets and yellow tape. At Opendoor, we know that for people with a physical or mental disability, safety is much more personal. Safety is about being seen and heard, and it’s about having a workplace that respects and protects all aspects of our wellbeing.Â
Celebrating World Day for Safety and Health at Work
We’re celebrating the progress being made towards building inclusive and safer workplaces, and we’re raising awareness of the positive impacts that small and thoughtful safety changes can make for every single person.
However, it’s important to remember that staying safe and healthy at work isn’t just a right. For many of us, it forms an important pillar in providing us with a fulfilling life where we feel understood, at peace, and able to contribute our best – every single day.
It’s such an important pillar that it forms this year’s focus for World Day for Safety and Health at Work, which looks at around the future of work and the workplace. It highlights psychological safety and psychosocial hazards and how we can be aware of these aspects of safety for ourselves, our loved ones, and our colleagues.
What is psychological safety?
Recent updates to the Occupational Health and Safety Amendment (Psychological Health) Regulations in Victoria say that your mental health at work is just as important as your physical health. Psychosocial hazards are things at work that can cause stress or harm to your mental wellbeing, such as:
- feeling overwhelmed or unsupported in your job.
- not having a say or control in how you do your work.
- a lack of role clarity about what is expected of you.
- not receiving adequate support.
For a person with a disability, these hazards can feel magnified if the right accommodations aren’t in place. That’s why creating an environment of psychological safety is at the heart of what Opendoor advocates for. We want you to feel safe to speak up, ask for help, and to be yourself at work without fear of judgement.Â
